We installed three basement windows today. What a giant pain in the ass. The old steel frames were rusting, so we decided to completely pull them out. First we cut them with the angle grinder and sawzall on all four sides, then tapped it with a hammer to break the steel bonds, then finally pried the frames out. More often than not, huge chunks or the surrounding foundation came out. The rapir was easy enough, even though its a little rough around the edges. (04/08/2013)
There wasnt enough room to frame the windows out, so we simply grouted them in on the bottom and sides. We did place one 2x4 along the top on two windows where the top cement was removed. The 2x4 was caulked to the window frame, and then grouted into place against the foundation walls.(04/08/2013)
This was our first foray into masonry, and I think it came out pretty good. The bottom of the window is up an inch or so compared to the old ones, which will hopefully help keep the water out of the basement during heavy rains. Ill have to touch up the top corners, and I may even parge along the top to protect the 2x4 top piece from the elements.(04/08/2013)
